fragile surface, knitted wire, nylon thread, timber, fabric, 2010
This work was installed as part of local:current an annual exhibiton held at Wollongong City Gallery to survey local artists who have not been shown at the gallery before.
This work is site specific to the gallery space, using the pillars as attachment points as well as acknowledging the trapezoid shape of the space.
The the knitted 'surface' was knitted over about a 3 month period.
The work was installed into the gallery over 4 days. Starting with the ceiling grid and progressing to the floor.
The work referrs to the connections that make up our planet and provide for our very existence - these connections are fragile and we as a species are breaking them everyday. This work will fall apart if too many connections are broken as will our existence if we are not able to stop what is a blind (and not-so-blind) destruction of that which is our only home.
